Second Surface Printing: Special & Expensive

The second surface printing refers to the process of printing on backside of clear materials like glass or acrylic. The aim to print on backside of the surface is to allow the material to prevent from being faded overtime.

Whereas, printing on the front side of a material is most commonly considered as the first surface printing. However, second surface printing is meant to be provide mirror or reflected image of the particular artwork in order to make it possible for the person to see that printed image or piece of graphic in right direction.

Appraising the Second Surface Printing:

The most important feature of second surface printing is the action as a barrier or protective surface from any overtime damage, performed by the clear material.

To keep the artwork away from direct interaction with environment, the printing is done on the second surface i.e. the backside for any of the application such as window graphics, overlay membrane graphic or floor decal. This prevention through second surface printing definitely adds years of life to the actual life of the print with the retrieve of the charges for other laminates, although the application depends upon the priority.

The second surface printing is especially frequent in the Point-of-Purchase (POP) display industry in making headers or endcap displays as they add attraction and impacts on the display itself. The use and presentation of vivid colors make it more refreshing and appealing to those whoever see it.

The clear materials that are firm and strong such as acrylic, PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) or polycarbonate which are printed at second surface have a propensity to gain a higher end look as compared to the first surface printing.

The second surface printing as said above is done on the backside so adds a depth level and gloss which is unable to be copied. And moreover, are resistant to exposure with outside elements such as Ultra-Violet rays, weather and vandalism. But with all advantages, a disadvantage for the second surface printing is that it might be more glare and less color and the viewer of the print has to look through glass window.
